With wide brown eyes, the young Nicaraguan boy eagerly reaches out for the book the kind man offers him. He’s never owned a book of his own before, and this one, with its bright pictures and many stories, is beautiful to him. Clutching it to his chest, he can hardly believe his good fortune.
Thanks to the generous support of faithful LHF supporters, scenes like this play out around the world every month, especially in countries where the poverty level is so great that books are an unimaginable luxury.
“The reactions of the people who receive the books are truly heartwarming,” said Ricardo Arguello, director of Lutheran Hour Ministries in Nicaragua. “Kids especially enjoy the books made for them; you can see the happiness on their faces when they hold them in their hands! For many adults, receiving a Bible brings great joy, especially because for some, it is the first time they have ever owned one. Many could not afford a Bible before, so receiving one for free is a special and emotional moment. These books are more than just reading material; they are gifts of hope and faith that touch people’s hearts.”
In many regions of the world, Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) is a highly valued partner in mission with LHF. Through LHM’s radio programs, social programs and church connections, LHF finds channels to distribute Small Catechisms, A Child’s Garden of Bible Stories, “Jesus Never Fails” devotions and more to people wanting to know more about Jesus.
In the Central American country of Nicaragua, LHF shares the Gospel through a variety of programs, including Project Joel (which focuses on guiding children and youth with Christian values) and Friends League (engaging adults in faith-based activities and fellowship). Throughout the year, they also run Bible courses for all ages to help people grow in their understanding of God’s Word, and they make connections through social media. In these settings, LHF’s printed books are invaluable.
“LHF’s books strengthen our faith and understanding of God’s Word,” Arguello said. “Printed books are especially valuable because they offer a lasting resource for people to read, reflect on and share with others. They are easy to use in areas with limited access to technology, making them an essential tool for spreading the Gospel in our communities.”
